Organizations and Canada's Role

Since there is such a high rate of HIV and AIDS in South Africa, there are many organization that are working together to help the people who are already infected with HIV/AIDS and to teach people how to prevent them from getting infected. In 2012, there was a estimated global funding of 19.1 billion dollars for programmes in low or middle income countries. Out of the global funding, 47 percent of the funding went to South Africa programmes.

One major organization, that helps fight HIV in Africa, is the World Health Organization(WHO).  The WHO has created an organization that aims to get people cost efficient prevention, care, treatment and support for people that have HIV.  They are able to do this by giving suggestions and tools to government people with prevention and control effects for HIV. They also provide technical support to help with management system, laboratory services, and strengthen surveillance, monitoring and evaluating patients. Besides providing supplies, the WHO program, does research on HIV/AIDS while they are helping people with HIV and AIDS.

Another big organization is the USAID-HIV/AIDS, which stands for the U.S Agency for International Development. This group funds a gigantic amount of public health interventions that targets HIV and AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa. USAID has partnered with a $15 billion President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. The USAID has relief programs in numerous countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.

There is also a organization called Regional AIDS Initiative Southern Africa(RAISA). This organization is a four year plan, that branched from another organization, called VSO, that helps people that have AIDS, all over the world. The goal is to strengthen the response to HIV and AIDS in South Africa. It partners with the government and civil society organisations to help provide effective treatment and care for people affected by HIV and AIDS.

This is just an example of what the CIDA money goes towards. This is just a small part of the mobile clinics, that are part of the programs that the CIDA money funds. These clinics have places where you can seek treatment, care, and education about HIV/AIDS.

There is also a Canadian organization, that helps people with HIV and AIDS in Africa. The organization's name is Canadian International Development Agency(CIDA)-HIV/AIDS in Africa. The organization has, over five years, sent over $90 million to programs to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Not only does Canada have an organization, but it also has a HIV/AIDS Response Fund set up by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development. This Fund aims to help with the reduction of HIV/AIDS incidence and prevalence and help the people of South Africa. In March 2012, this fund has provided funding for 22 projects that are in vital areas of Sub-Saharan Africa. Due to this Canadian Fund, many of the projects are able to increase their capacity of patients.

Another way Canada help Africa, is that it signed a general agreement on development cooperation. This agreement is that Africa works on working to get a better public health service, with the help of Canada. Canada also helps to support Africa’s HIV and AIDS Strategic Plan.

There are many organizations that aim to help people with HIV/AIDS in Africa. If you Google “HIV/AIDS in South Africa organization”, a whole list of different organization will pop up. Many have a place where you can donate money, that would help the organization get the supplies they need in Africa. If you feel like donating, please donate! Many people in South Africa, still need help!

  1. Wow Emily! I never knew that there were so many different organization involved in helping people affect by AIDS and HIV. It's awesome to see how the organization are contributing to help those in need, such as the WHO organization, they're give suggestions and tools to government people to help control the effects of HIV, that's incredible!! Also, at the end of your post you mentioned that many organizations have places where you can donate to help the issue, which really gets me thinking that there are some people who donate, but others who couldn't care less. In my opinion, it doesn't matter how much you donate at least you can say you are helping support the issue, in this case, HIV and AIDS! I'm really looking forward to your future posts! Outstanding job!
